District Chief Executive (DCE) for North Tongu, Richard Collins Arku, has presented items and starts up kits worth GHS164,000 to 70 persons with disability (PWDs) in the district.
Persons with disability have 3% of district.releases of District Assembly Common Fund meant for their upkeep.
The fund, which was previously given in cash, is now used to buy items for them in a bid to improve them economically.
Presenting the items Richard Collins Arku promised government’s total commitment at making sure that PWDs are well catered for.
He said the government is committed to helping them to stop begging dangerously on the street.
He appealed to the public to also support the PWDs.
Mr Richard Collins Arku said building capacities and empowering PWDs remains one of the government’s major priorities.
According to him, the assembly, which represents the government in the district, will continue to support PWDs with training and working tools to empower them financially.
The president of the North Tongu Branch of persons with disability, Atsu Amedzo, urged the government to increase the amount allocated so persons with any form of disability could benefit from it.
“Government must increase the our percentage to enable others benefit from the program,” he pleaded on behalf of the group.
He however commended the DCE for the area for his deep love towards persons with disability in the Noth Tongu District
Items presented were, sewing machines, deep freezers, fridges, wheel chairs, provisions, milling machines, desktop computers, laptops, cash among others.
