The Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Kofi Portuphy has suggested that instead of allowing the vigilante groups in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to brutalise innocent Ghanaians, government should rather consider using them to fight the army worm infestation.

Addressing a press conference in Accra on Thursday, Mr Portuphy said suggested to President Akufo-Addo and the Minister of Food and Agriculture, Dr Afriyie Akoto that using members of the various groups such as the Invincible and Delta Forces to fight the army worm menace would be more beneficial.

“Akufo-Addo should use the Delta Force, Invincible Force, Volta crocodiles and other militant groups to fight the army worms,” he stated.

The press conference, according to him, was to address issues along the lines of lawlessness, insecurity, and government-backed terrorism in the country.

Additionally, he said, the press conference was also to address issues on “composition of government, nepotism, lack of commitment to fight corruption, arrogance of power, lies, dishonesty, and unbridled partisanship within the Akufo-Addo led government.”

Army worm

Concerning the army worm infestation, Mr Portuphy said the NPP government had failed to combat the canker, hence leading to the destruction of many farms by the pests.

According to him, the failure of the NPP government to use proper mechanisms to fight the army worm infestation had brought worry to many Ghanaian farmers whose farms have been infested by the pests.

He added that if NPP had resorted to the laid down procedure by the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the army worm infestation could have been combated by now.

He said NADMO has a policy and procedure for fighting pest infestation, including the army worm but the NPP government has refused to use the services of NADMO.

Describing himself as an “army worm specialists,” Mr Portuphy said farmers would continue to harvest the havoc of the army worms if the NPP government does not use the right people to fight the army worm canker.

“I am a specialist in fighting army worm,” he said, saying “this army worm infestation could have been solved if Akufo-Addo had used the experts.
